Wii Virtual Console demonstration
For those of you unlucky enough to attend E3 and see it for yourself, a video of the Virtual Console navigation menu and gameplay from Sonic the Hedgehog have made its way onto the net. Also, behold the tiny size of the Virtual Console's gamepad.

If Nintendo launches at $199 they will sell so many consoles! $249 may be squeezing it, but under $200 has such a psychological pull to it.
It's crazy to think that both MS and Sony are rooting for Nintendo, just so they can beat the other one. It's exactly what Nintendo wanted to happen.
Man, it would be crazy if it worked out like this:
Sony loses $4 billion on PS3 hardware sales
MS loses $2 billion on XBOX 360 hardware sales
Nintendo makes $1 billion on Wii hardware sales
Anyway, on topic, the Virtual Console could use some sprucing up, at least by what's in this video, but I LOVE the controller shell. And yes, the Wii remote hooks in the back, which would allow for games to take advantage of both standard controls and the motion sensing of the remote.

Hmm... is it just me, or does that Z button trigger look like it would be a pain in the ass to hit? I would like to know how N64 games with heavy use of the Z trigger will handle. Otherwise, I few other gripes. It looks awesome!
And while it's clear to see the video is sourced from IGN if you click on the read link, the watermark is hidden behind the imedded video player on this page, so I thought they might as well get a mention of credit.

What the hell is wrong with the aspect ratio of this video?
That controller looks so nice, it is a wonder that it wasn't the original N64 controller. It seems like the obvious evolution from the SNES pad. I'm hoping they move that Z button though. And make it wireless. Tethering it to the freehand controller will suck.

Not convinced by the controller myself (ugly!) but just seeing the Super Mario World logo again makes me happy :-)
Looking forward to beating all 96 levels again (or was that 97...)

Okay, first of all. Nintendo is good, but if you own a 360 you know that sooner or later Microsoft will deliever....but I know nintendo has it in the bag with the Wii. Don't jump to conclusions about systems...other than ps3. That will lose billions of Sony's prescious money....Well...I'm gonna go watch some Wii online.

That Z button does look kind of hard to hit placed where it is, but man oh man do I want a Wii and virtual console controller!
sea @ May 17th 2006 7:45AM
hehe, someone left their phone number at the end of the vid...

I think the classic controller looks sweet. Though, in the shot from Nintendo's Japan website, where the Z button was, there was one symetrically opposite to it, 'tis gone in that video.
As for the shell comment, it's not a shell, at least from that video it certainly doesn't look like a shell. It connects to the remote, not the other way around.
Another thing, when they had a close up of the controller at work, the dude was using the d-pad and the analogue stick. Pretty handy.
The excitement builds.

The important question which I'm sure is on everyones' minds right now is, of course, will Goldeneye support twin analogue control on that little puppy? :D
SuicideNinja @ May 17th 2006 2:51PM
Funny...I can emulate all of these already. But for some reason, I still want to do it via Wii.
Shiro @ May 17th 2006 3:15PM
Er, no, Goldeneye won't be available on the Virtual Console.
It was made by Rare, correct? Rareware was bought by Microsoft, and I doubt that they'd be willing to give up rights to Goldeneye (and Perfect Dark, too, unfortunately...)
And I also heard that they'd probably tweak the controls depending on the game, so that button placing wouldn't be a problem.

Aaron, thanks for just wasting five minutes of my life to download that 75 mb file, and another nine minutes to watch it. There was almost nothing about the virtual console in that video, except for the 30 seconds at the end, and all they talked about was Bonks Adventure. Fourteen minutes of my life wasted, thanks alot.
